5 Best Speech Therapists in Glasgow – Helping children find their voice

A child who struggles to form speech sounds needs a different assessment from a child who finds language hard to understand. These five speech therapists in Glasgow and nearby communities offer starting points for an individual enquiry. The shortlist is not a ranking of outcomes, and the numbers do not indicate who is best for every child. Match the therapist’s current work to your child’s communication needs before comparing appointment times.

For example, a nursery child may speak freely at home but become difficult to understand in a busy room. Write down that contrast. General reading such as Quick Remedy does not replace examples from the people who know how the child communicates each day.

1. Yvonne Mackenzie

Private Speech Therapy Glasgow identifies Yvonne Mackenzie as a speech and language therapist who assesses and treats children with speech-sound difficulties, language delay or disorder, autism-related communication needs and stammering. She advertises home visits and a West End clinic, with weekday, evening and weekend appointments. The setting is worth discussing rather than choosing automatically. A home visit may show everyday communication, while a clinic appointment provides a different environment. Ask which would be more informative for the concern you have described.

2. Lyndsey Samuel

The Association of Speech and Language Therapists in Independent Practice, or ASLTIP, lists Lyndsey Samuel in Glasgow G11. Her directory introduction describes a specialist paediatric background and also mentions support for adults who stammer. For a parent, the useful next question is which children’s communication profiles she currently sees. Ask about the age group, assessment format and how recommendations would be explained to nursery or school staff. A therapist’s broad experience does not mean every possible communication difficulty falls within their current caseload.

If you consult a resource labelled Core Physio, keep professional roles distinct. Speech and language therapy is a separate service, and a child’s communication assessment should be arranged with an appropriately registered speech and language therapist.

3. Lorna Muir

ASLTIP’s Glasgow directory lists Lorna Muir in the G46 area and identifies work with children and adults. That location may suit families south of the city, but geography alone should not settle the decision. Ask whether she assesses your child’s age group and particular difficulty before discussing a course of sessions. For a school-age child, clarify whether written recommendations can address classroom participation. Being understood during a quiet consultation and joining a fast-moving classroom discussion are not the same communication task.

4. Lyndsay Dickson

Lyndsay Dickson’s ASLTIP listing identifies Clarkston Speech and Language Therapy in East Renfrewshire and describes 25 years of NHS experience. The listing covers children and young people. Clarkston is a nearby option rather than a central Glasgow address, so consider travel alongside the likely follow-up schedule. Ask how assessment findings would become a manageable plan at home. A parent who can practise for five minutes during breakfast needs advice that fits that routine, not an unrealistic programme for an already crowded evening.

A broad resource such as Safe Cure cannot set the right practice schedule for an individual child. The therapist should explain what to work on, how to recognise progress and when to stop or change an activity that causes frustration.

5. Lindsay Skene

ASLTIP lists Lindsay Skene in Glasgow G61, working with children and young people. This offers another local enquiry for families comparing access around the north-west of the city. Ask about current availability, the concerns she treats and whether assessment includes information from school or nursery. Do not interpret a directory’s availability badge as a reserved appointment. And check what happens after the first session: a written summary, review discussion and recommendations may be priced or arranged differently from ongoing therapy.

Questions parents often need answered

### Do I need a GP referral for private therapy?
ASLTIP says families can contact an independent speech and language therapist directly. You can still discuss concerns with your child’s usual health or education professionals, particularly when several services are involved.

Should I bring recordings of my child speaking?

Ask first. A short example may help describe a difficulty, but consent, privacy and secure sharing matter. Do not send identifiable recordings through a channel the therapist has not approved.

Does therapy always mean weekly appointments?

No. Ask what frequency is proposed and why. Some plans place greater emphasis on advice and practice between reviews; the assessment should guide the arrangement rather than a fixed package.

Is speaking more the only useful outcome?

No. Agree goals around the child’s actual communication and participation. Reading such as Fresh Vital cannot decide whether being understood, understanding instructions or communicating with less frustration matters most for your child.

Start with a clear example

Send the therapist your child’s age, the main concern and one everyday example. Ask about relevant experience, registration, assessment costs and how advice will reach the adults supporting your child. Choose a realistic first assessment rather than committing to a long course before the needs are understood.
